The rat infestation in the Seattle/Puget Sound region has resulted in a high-density rat population established throughout all urban and residential neighborhoods. Rattus norvegicus (the Norway rat, brown rat, wharf rat, or sewer rat) and Rattus rattus (the black rat, ship rat, or roof rat) have displaced other small animals as invasive species, firmly establishing themselves as significant pests that cause damage and spread filth.

These two rat species are found from Tacoma to Bellevue and Seattle, extending to Bellingham and the Canadian border, as well as from Olympia through the Olympic Peninsula, including Bremerton. They were initially brought over by sailing ships alongside European settlers and were originally confined to early seaports such as Tacoma, Seattle, Everett, and Port Townsend, WA.

As our populations grew, coupled with urban sprawl and the rapid increase in suburban neighborhoods in the latter part of the 20th century, rats expanded their presence right alongside us.
These rats thrive in the climate, vegetation, and the beaches and marshlands surrounding Greater Seattle.
